Project/Location The Sustainable Environmental Management Programme (SEMP) in Northern Palawan, Philippines seeks to conserve the precious environment and natural resources and provide alternative income methods through environmentally sustainable tourism for host communities. The project areas are Busuanga, El Nido, Coron, Culion and Taytay. An initial plan funded by JICA was prepared to provide a framework for tourism development. The SEMP has implemented many of the initiatives in the JICA plan together with many newly identified projects. |
Project Description The programme included three components: 1. Environmental Management System Strengthening 2. Soil Erosion Protection dealing with the rehabilitation of the Taytay-El Nido road 3.Tourism Development Programme The third component involved the preparation of a series of plans and programmes for the effective implementation and management of tourism in the project areas together with the establishment of standards, guidelines and regulations for environmentally sustainable development |
