The Citadel Tourism Development Concept |
Project/Location Amman, Jordan has considerable potential as a tourism destination. It is a unique, beautiful and historic Arabic city, possessing a distinctive cultural heritage. However, as yet, it has not been fully developed or promoted in the tourism market place. Much can be done to improve, present and expand the city's tourism industry and to increase its economic and social contribution. The cultural heritage resources, which constitute the foundation for tourism in Amman, are fragile and irreplaceable. It is therefore essential that tourism development be carefully planned and managed. John Robinson was commissioned by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to set out tourism development opportunities for The Citadel, to provide a good base on which to facilitate the preparation of a future Management Plan, position The Citadel as a major anchor and catalyst for the further tourism development of Amman. |
Project Description The report is in five sections: 1. Tourism Context, introduces The Citadel in the context of the National Tourism Strategy and the need to strengthen product development. It highlights the importance of setting clear objectives for the site and puts forward key product development principles to deliver a quality experience for the visitor. 2. Tourism Experience, considers the visitors experience in terms of a journey to the site and presents an insight into the tourist's expectations and receptiveness to intervention at different stages of their visit. 3. Tourism Structure Plan, presents the overall development opportunities for the site and surroundings. 4. Development Scenarios, presents four scenarios for further discussion, prioritisation and implementation. 5. Summary, presents a series of guidelines to be carried forward in the preparation of the Management Plan. |
