Project/Location During the last 20 years the 'floating harbour' as Bristol's waterfront is known, has become the focus for development initiatives. The Bristol City Council recognised the importance of unlocking the waterfront's potential and together with four other land owners, commissioned LDR International with John Robinson as urban designer to prepare a planning concept for 30 hectares of land and water known as Canons Marsh. |

Project Description The goal was to create a premier area for recreation, arts and leisure for people of Bristol and the region. One of the key elements in the scheme is the designation of an `Arts Arena,' a cultural district with a new Centre for the Performing Arts. To emphasise Bristol's impressive maritime history, a Maritime Heritage Quarter has been created centring on the SS Great Britain and the expanded maritime museum. The mix of uses throughout the site was balanced to allow for economic growth and to generate the revenue needed to build the infrastructure and the new public waterfront. |
