Project/Location The Economic Development Board of the Kingdom of Bahrain engaged SOM consultants to create an overall National Land Use Plan for the State of Bahrain. At the same time, IDI were commissioned to create a Strategy and Master Plan for the tourism sector. John Robinson Planning and Design led a team to prepare the Development Framework for tourism which forms a major part of the Strategy and Master Plan as it links the physical development of tourism directly to the strategic objective of making tourism a platform for development and an economic driver as well as supporting the initial objectives of positioning Bahrain as a boutique destination and doubling the value of the tourism economy in real terms by 2013. The work in effect overlays the National Plan and sets out priority projects for action. Project Description 12 Tourism Development Areas including 20 Action Areas were singled out for planning and development reflecting their potential.
